BOOK REVIEW
Al Suleimany (Being the Safe Driver!, 2013, etc.) collects his wide-ranging columns from the Oman Daily Observer (an English daily) into one volume.
Subject matter here ranges from Omani politics to social ills, workplace life and religious reflections. Of the book’s purpose, Al Suleimany writes: “It is hoped that people will buy this book for the greater cause of people talking and communicating to each other—and in building tolerance, patience, understanding, love, togetherness and oneness in humanity—as the main theme and focus of this book—and in spreading these universal messages to mankind.”
He treats each disparate topic with the same sensibility, keeping his stated purpose at the forefront. With a tone by turns admonishing and casual, he manages to make moral pronouncements without coming across as condescending or pedantic. Many of his moral concerns center on matters of etiquette, both in the workplace and at home. He writes, “As a human resources professional and consultant, even I have found dealing with family members as the most hard, complex and difficult in comparisons! (sic) Jobs are definitely much easier!”
His opinions are informed by his religion; for instance, in a discussion of debt, he reminds his readers that the Surah II Al Baqarah reads, “If the debtor is in a difficulty, grant him time till it is easy for him to repay.” The profusion of articles is arranged alphabetically by topic, with a table of contents. Despite the status as a collection, the work is more or less disjointed; often, it’s not immediately clear what topic a particular piece seeks to discuss. What redeems the disorder, however, is the force of Al Suleimany’s personality, which comes through in every article, no matter the topic.
A well-rounded perspective of Omani life. Indeed, this is a great write from a great author in the Middle East.

Between Us Only! The Sequel – 3!
About The Book
Between Us Only! The Sequel – Two! – has been adapted from Majid Al Suleimany’s successful newspaper columns in The Oman Daily Observer. Utilizing the very best touching emotional based stories and articles from the columns that he has penned over the past four years, Al Suleimany touches on a wide variety of vital and riveting topics. The subject matter will be of interest to everyone from teenagers to grandparents – and from the clerks to the CEOs.
Between Us Only! The Sequel – Two! – focuses on the study of humanity, human needs, human interaction, society, and economics, as well as other areas. In fact, the author covers all socio-economic-political aspects of society, with an emphasis on working environments such as office issues and aspects.
The author also addresses society as a whole, and the dire repercussions and consequences of bad ideas and thoughts that can be harmful to society in the broadest sense. Though many topics apply to Oman and GCC countries, the collection of columns organized by Al Suleimany offer a universal appeal because, in his view, society and family are quite similar.
According to the author, “We have the same needs, worries, concerns and fears—as well as what we like and do not like. This is because the human being is essentially the same—regardless of race, creed, religion, color, ancestry, and ethnicity!”
The book will encourage soul-searching, deep analysis, and a quest to make the world a better place. It has been penned directly from the heart of the author to the reader. It carries many emotional personal family stories and encounters – including work experiences as a highly-qualified human resources management consultant.
The book moves quickly, advancing without boundaries, and is careful never to get bogged down in politics. While critical, the writings are also realistic and practical, and stress the need in society for change in a way that will foster more patience, tolerance, and understanding.
Yet Between Us Only! The Sequel – Three! – is not without controversy. For readers who wish to study Arabic (and Islamic) approaches to the Middle East, the West, and other religions, the book makes excellent references relating to the post-September 11 world. The increases in religious fundamentalism and radicalization in society, and the fact that many youngsters are on board with these aspects, are also taken to task.
The author, through his writings, offers up a tome that is part prayer and part preaching, desperately hoping for a change in the world that will produce a new and more positive direction. “Live and let live in peace, harmony, and co-existence,” is Al Suleimany’s mantra.

Between Us Only!
All My Combined Works!
Even if emotionally precarious and not yet crippled!
It has been said so many times before that there is nothing for surety and permanent in life except God and Death only!
But then we human beings become ungrateful and disconcerting when good things have happened to us. We become proud, contemptuous, conceited, patronising and condescending – and our heads are held high in the clouds – and look down on all the others – and as if nothing untoward will ever or can happen to us! We become so sure and confident on this – that we just do not care or bother about others – and even those that look up at us – and those in need and support – and those less fortunate than ourselves!
Like so many times before – people have said the very same things about writing – that writing is the only profession that people do not consider you ridiculous if you do not make any money! I would know with boxes and boxes of unsold books at home returned from the bookshops because they need to make more space for other books where at least they get no complaints if the books are returned – and where more credit facilities and times are given than yours truly!
Time and time again I have said the very same things – I stumbled into writing – it is more a hobby and passion for me than considering it as a career or business opportunity. Let alone the returns being long and tedious – it is also unreliable and undependable. In my job as a Human Resources Consultant,
I was shocked beyond belief to find that even professionally qualified writers in jobs make lesser money than even well placed PROs for that matter! People look down on writers as something just average and mediocre at best – even if odd hours are put in – and the job is at the higher risk of job scales in personal dangers, harm – and even your own life too. If you read about what they write in places like Journalists Without Borders and find the number of people that have their freedom – and even lives – lost because of their writings – and what they believe in! There is no tool that can easily enrage and infuriate people than what is being written – and what people can read.
Sometimes the scheming and curtailing can be like in dramas and plays – and has to be done to show it being ‘decent, clean and neat’ – so other angles are looked at to pin you in. Even artificial and trumped up charges are being made – or even closed cases are being revived – just to pin you down and silence you!
That is why there are many emotions and traumas with Writers – and especially if the family are not supportive and backing the writer. Things said why do you waste your time in writing more new books – when the old ones are all over the house and not sold! I guess that is one way of looking at things in short focuses of money and profits being the trump priority cards! And focuses and outlooks!
Or when a foreign person calls you a local writer to ‘come and collect your (un writeable) books – because they are just occupying space – and we need to stock other books instead. That is why I wrote my article last week of ‘Biting The Hand That Feeds You!
It soon leads to troubles in relationships and in dealings – and even more worse when those that are in the same pot holes like you in writing feel they are better off by getting regular salaries in twisting and distorting what you have originally written and intended! I think we have seen those plays and dramas that even before it starts we know what the end will be – because we have seen it all before and just happening as expected to happen.
Between Us Only! Short Takes – Two!
Having said all that I am yet still pleased to announce my two other new books – after The Road Safety one – Being The Safe Driver! – www.bethesafedriver.com The books are a combination of all my articles in all my columns after the last Sequel Book 5 years ago – titled The Short Takes Two and The Sequel Three in the Between Us Only! Series.
Between Us Only! – The Sequel – Three!
I am very confident, sure and certain that a time will indeed come – even if far away that future generations may ask where are the full works of MAS – and I want my great great grandchildren to be able to show – here they are – perhaps a Charles Dickens or George Orwell of the future! That time will come for sure – and I will be smiling in my grave – not turning! And those that are now famous and rich flying private jets and big houses and cars will have nothing to show – or be remembered by – but just their left bones in their graves!

Please note that Trafford Publishing USA had converted the books free for this Author due to many requests worldwide .
This Psychology book is sold out in Oman bookshops. Sadly they will not order directly and want me to order the books for them! And I am just broke…!
And that is the Oman (Arab) tragedy for all openly to see! I can see similar lack of support for my next book in Road Safety book novel type – see posting here.
Will we ever change? I do not think so! If I was an expatriate and wrote about Omani Castles and or Butterflies – all of us will come forward to help – especially if it is a HER!

Last week my article – Respect Your Parents – went very well. It is still there in my above website.
A long time a good family sent me the following – which I will share with you today on this Happy Day of Eid. He sent me this with the advent and arrival of my first twin girls. He meant well. He just said – Quote -
If a child lives with criticism, he learns to condemn . . . If a child lives with hostility, he learns to fight . . . If a child lives with fear, he learns to be apprehensive . . . If a child lives with pity, he learns to feel sorry for himself . . . If a child lives with ridicule, he learns to be shy . . . If a child lives with jealousy, he learns to feel envy . . . If a child lives with shame, he learns to feel guilty …
BUT
If a child lives with tolerance, he learns to be patient . . . If a child lives with encouragement, he learns to be confident . . . If a child lives with praise, he learns to be appreciative . . . If a child lives with acceptance, he learns to love . . If children live with approval, they learn to like themselves… If a child lives with honesty, he learns what truth is . . . If a child lives with fairness, he learns justice . . . If children live with recognition, they learn to have a goal. If children live with sharing, they learn to be generous. If a child lives with security, he learns to have faith in himself and those about him . . . If a child lives with friendliness, he learns the world is a nice place in which to live – unquote.
Long time ago when our late Father was still alive, in our usual Friday family get-together – there were the usual now and then usual disagreements. Like in most times – the source and issue at stake was just minor and significant – where the best course of action was ‘to agree to disagree’ – and move on! But like I always say – After Offices – Family is where people most misbehave – and the worst of people, their nature and their character and personality come out!
So poor dad was saying to me – If your Mother and I are gone – you are supposed to be the de facto head of this family – whether you like it or not – and whether you are rich or not – whether you are powerful and influential or not – and whether you are still respected and esteemed or not. It just does not make any difference or change to the situation – but you will still be that head. It is like if your nose smells – but you cannot cut it – because the loser is you. That smelling nose are some of the family members – or the ‘black sheep’ of the family in slang terms!

It is not an easy task for you – but the most important thing is to maintain respect and control more by persuasion and diplomacy and tact – rather than wanting to impose yourself on others – and your views, outlooks, focuses – and whatever else!
People will challenge you – people will try to upset and annoy you – people will try to bring you down – to disgrace and embarrass you – but you must still maintain a cool presence of mind – and try your level best to maintain as a leader by examples and demonstration in life – not empty words – but being real, practical and realistic!
Show by example and in demonstrative guidance and leadership – not by trying short term and quick measures that will only backfire – turn a bad situation more worse – and make you as The Loser – rather than The Winner! My father was not that much educated – but was a very wise man indeed! Sadly my father had passed away before he could see me his son writing!
All Images For Demonstration Purposes Only!
I was watching this film in Al Jazeera TV which should inspire us all! The film is titled – Beirut Buenos Aires Beirut. An Argentinian woman (Graciela) woman goes in search of her Lebanese heritage and ends up uniting two families from two different worlds.
Graciela is a 37-year-old Argentinian woman of Lebanese descent living in Buenos Aires. Before her great-aunt died, she told Graciela a family secret. Her father [Mohammed], Lebanese by birth, did not die in Argentina. He left his family and returned to Lebanon. Angry at his departure, his wife and children cut off communication with him,” Graciela explains.
One of the last things they heard of Mohammed is that he married again and might have had more children in Lebanon. My great-aunt gave me a box with letters and photos that she had kept …. Some had never been read. Somebody once said that a letter always arrives at its destination,” Graciela says.
“When I saw the letters, I felt they had been left as a legacy. And I wanted to know more about my family history. Who was Mohammed? Why did he come to live in Argentina? Why did he return to Lebanon? Are there any relatives of mine on the other side of the world?”
Graciela decided to look further into Mohammed’s life and started to retrace his story – from his initial arrival in Buenos Aires and his life in Argentina as an immigrant, to his return to Lebanon.
“I discovered Arab immigrants to Argentina were not as welcome as Europeans. Arab immigration was large, but discreet, because it has always faced intolerance and discrimination,” she says.
In search of Mohammed’s Lebanese family and in order to learn details of Mohammed’s life and her own roots, she travels to Lebanon to trace the threads of a personal story that unfolds as she delves deeper into her family’s past and a different culture.
And finally, after 50 years of separation, she is the catalyst for two families from two different worlds to reunite
Please do take the time and efforts on this Eid to be together with the family – and the relatives – the friends. Please do not forget to keep in touch and in contact with also those in home towns and villages – and those abroad too!
Eid Mubarak Greetings. Please take extra care and precaution – in driving – and please visit my upgraded and new website – www.bethesafedriver.com and let us pray for all those in wars and troubles – and cannot celebrate and be together as Family this time!

Majid Al Suleimany’s exciting new book is “A Cry for Help!”
“A Cry for Help!” examines the management styles of Arabian Gulf Corporation Council countries
MUSCAT, Oman – Author Majid Al Suleimany exposes the increasing extremism, fundamentalism and radicalization in management styles and employees’ receptions and reaction in his new book “A Cry for Help!”(published by Trafford Publishing)
With over 35 years of human resource experience in Oman and with the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, Al Suleimany digs deep into the Arab office environment. Suleimany spins “a frank, honest and open book exposing the increasing lack of ethics, principles, professionalism and tolerance in the office environment.”
“A Cry for Help!” focuses on the particular type of management that is being used in the Arab workplace while explaining the context and perspectives in the work environment. Are You Happy?
On a certain occasion, during an elegant welcoming reception for the new Director of Marketing of an important London company, some of the wives of the other Directors, who wanted to get acquainted with the new spouse, asked her with some hesitation:
Does your spouse make you happy,
truly happy?
The husband, who at the moment was not at her side, but was sufficiently near to hear the question, paid attention to the conversation, sitting up slightly, feeling secure, even filling his chest lightly in pride, knowing that his spouse would answer affirmatively, since she had always been there for him during their marriage.
Nevertheless, to both his and the others’ surprise, she replied simply
“No, no he doesn’t make me happy…
The room became uncomfortably silent, as if everyone were listening to the spouse’s response.
The husband was petrified. He couldn’t believe what his wife was saying, especially at such an important occasion for him
To the amazement of her husband and of everyone, she simply placed enigmatically on her head an elegant black silk scarf and continued:
“No, he doesn’t make me happy …I AM HAPPY.”
The fact that I am happy or not, doesn’t depend on him, but on me.
“I am the only person upon which my happiness depends.
I make the choice to be happy in each situation and in each moment of my life.
If my happiness were to depend on other people, on other things or circumstances on the face of this earth, I would be in serious trouble!
Everything that exists in this life changes continually: humans, wealth, my body, the climate, pleasures, etc.
I could enumerate an infinite list…
Over my life I have learned a couple of things: I decide to be happy and the rest is a matter of ”experiences or circumstances;” – like helping, and understanding, accepting, listening, consoling;
and with my spouse,
I have lived and practiced this many times….
Happiness will always be found in forgiveness and in loving yourself and others
- …It’s not the responsibility of my spouse to make me happy… He also has his “experiences or circumstances.” I love him and he loves me, often inspite of his circumstances and of mine.
“He changes, I change, the environment changes, everything changes;
Having forgiveness and true love, and observing these changes,
that can be, big or little, but always happen,
we must face them with the love that exists in each one of us.
If the two of us love and forgive each other,
the changes will only be “experiences or circumstances”
that enrich us and give us strength.
Otherwise we would only be “living together.”
For some, divorce is the only solution; (…in reality it is the easiest…)
To truly love, is difficult, It is to forgive unconditionally, to live,
To take the “experiences or circumstances” as they are,
Facing them together and being happy with conviction
There are those who say:
“I cannot be happy because I am sick, because I have no money,
Because it’s too cold, because they insulted me,
Because someone stopped loving me,
Because someone didn’t appreciate me!”
But what you don’t know is that you can be happy even though you are sick,
whether it is too hot, whether you have money or not,
Whether someone has insulted you,
Or someone didn’t love you, or hasn’t valued you.
BEING HAPPY
is an attitude about life and each one of us must decide !
BEING HAPPY, depends on you !

Lessons of Life!
Learning The Lessons of Life The Hard Way!
This incident had happened to me when I was a small kid – and I have not forgotten it to this day – even though my father had already passed away more than a decade ago – May Allah rest him in peace – Amin.
I was playing with this cute puppy. Frankly, I am more of a cat person – but this puppy seemed to like me a lot! It was then time for afternoon prayers – and I joined the congregation in prayers after the usual abolution. One of the so-called uncles whispered something to my late father – and I got a beating of my life that still haunts me to this day as an over 60 person! From that time I steered away from dogs – because with due respects to ‘dogs-lovers’ – I did not know that they were considered as ‘unclean’ animals society looking – even in the place in that distant land! I learnt the hard way – because this puppy had followed me to the mosque – for a dog it was just a building!
My late Father was also not always pleased with me – because I had a tendency of ‘not wanting to get involved’ – when ‘brother fought brother’ – or even ‘sister against sister’ – as they sometimes did! We were 14 of us – 6 brothers – and 8 sisters as the children – blessings of Allah – God. My late Father used to say to me – you are the elder – so ‘you must be involved’ in these things – to separate them – and bring peace and harmony in the house!
That is the kind of person that I am – of not wanting to get really involved in such issues. It also comes in ‘giving up’ – because you say the same things day-in and day-out – and no one is respecting and hearing you. Like I always say talking to brick walls. Not only talking – but also banging your head – and it ends swollen and red – and the brick walls just sneer and slight you instead – unmoved and uncaring – as always. Instead you end not only as ‘The Loser’ – but you also suffer and get tormented in so many other ways instead!
I also believe this – and have said it so many times before! There is nothing untoward and ‘just not in’ than raising hopes and expectations of people – than dashing and disappointing them the worse than before – by not keeping the promises per se – or not doing anything real and material in this regard. That is why the world is in a greater mess and chaos than ever before – even more after the ‘promises’ were made – and all hopes and dreams dashed. It would have been better ‘not to get involved’ – and let things run their natural cause! There is also this thing. Do not take people for granted – and that they will act and or perform as to what you want them to be – or do either!
If you have also read the 90/10 principle of how you react to a situation can determine how more worse it can be then it was before. It is a famous principle – and I have said about it so many times in this column too! In my article 8 years ago titled The Power of The Media – www.myown-ebooks.com – I joked about this ‘Red Indian’ boy cartoon where he is seen shouting – in front .of his family in a cinema – kill the (unprintable) – as the ‘good nice cowboys’ chase the ‘stinky Red Indians’! The Red Indians were there as the original owners of the land – and defending their homelands – but came out worse out! Simply and smugly put – not all that glitters is gold! It takes two to tango – one cannot tango by himself – or herself alone!
There is also this thing. Conversely, if there is a great thing in front of you – or possessed by you – what bad name calling will not change facts on the grounds. My son was saying to me that his friend was telling him that he feels lucky that he is not my son – because he ‘does not have the pressures’ to perform in life like your father’s achievements – and that was a great eye-opener for my son of what he was really dealing in life. Until that time – he did not think much of the subject – and had not even read any of the books – though lying idly spread out in the house!
People should act their roles and responsibilities in life – without being told – or reminded – or reprimanded – or find out too late – like others before them – that the options to act and behave are now limited – or even not there at all.
In summary – I do not like to get involved in such issues like politics – and or deep religion – but there has been so much pressure for me to write – to use your pragmatism and wisdom. Unfortunately – those who tell me these things I cannot tell them what I really feel and think – because at this stage in my life – I have had already enough – and I sincerely wish sometimes that I had been more stronger and assertive in life – to do what I really wanted to do in the first place – rather than trying to ‘please or to be seen doing the so-called right things. But our Religion forbids us to think like this – because everything happens for a reason – and there are no accidents in life!

Between Us Only!
Taking The High Road!
The Sequel!
I wrote on this topic first on 3rd January 2007. I repeat it today again!
In the West, they have this expression – which I have repeated many times in this same column. What would Jesus do in this case? This should guide us even Muslims if we ask the same question on our Great Prophet – Peace Be Upon Him!
Part of the article is reproduced below.
There is nothing that is so detrimental, demeaning and pushing one to the brink of decadence, malaise, moral corruption and destruction than by letting emotions and clear transparent thinking and vision cum focus cloud us than by not thinking straight for ourselves and letting others guide and control us, or listening blindly to them because they profess to be our ‘sincere, caring and feeling friends’.
Images – The Demonstrations
This coupled by being easily led and fooled – and by being emotionalized and traumatized to that extent that we fail to distinguish between what are lies and fibs (even poison) being fed to us, instead of analyzing for ourselves of what is the truth and reality. Not only do we owe it to ourselves, but those who have put trust, faith, confidence and loyalty on us. To them and who consider us as their very own and who see us as their elders from whom they would inherit, emulate and copy. We owe it to them more than we owe it to ourselves.
Images For Demonstration Purposes Only!
Look at our greatness that was recorded in history. The Great Caliphates in the history of Islam, when a visitor sees a local man washing his clothes on the riverbed. The visitor asks the person if he could guide him to the ‘castle of the Caliphate’. The man is replied – I will take you there, but first let me finish my clothes. The visitor is then led to a simple house, and where despite his protestations he is welcomed to some food and water, because he had been traveling. The man is impatient to see the Caliphate. After he had finished his food and rested, the ‘Washer’ introduces himself as the Caliphate (I think was Abubacker bin Abu Talib).
The visitor is shocked – you are the Caliphate? The man who washes his own clothes? Living simply and poorly? I come from The Roman Empire for a message to The Islamic Caliphate, from the Roman Army that is dreadful and fearful of the Islamic Army?
Or when the victorious Islamic Army entered Mecca, and forgave all those who transgressed and tortured the Muslims in the past, and ended in them becoming Muslims.
Or our Great Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) how he forgave a village that had stoned him and until he was bleeding? If he had wanted, he could have brought harm and destruction to the whole village, but he did not do it. By his actions the village became all Muslims later on, because they knew the true and right meaning of the Religion. Or the actions and behaviours of Saladin, when he took over and controlled Palestine! All those are what are called Greatness, and the true preaching and practicing of our Religion!
Recently, there have been many examples of provocations and insults against the Arab and specifically the Muslim world, and as open affront and demeaning move against Muslims. Even Saudi Arabia, GCC and the rest of the world protested. It is not a question of being for or against the Saddam hanging here, but the choice of date for this execution – on Hajj days!.
Though it is an emotionally charged insult and affront, we in the Arab and Muslim world need to be under control of our emotions and get into straight thinking and focus – and take our true Islamic teachings and the Holy Book as our guide, and leave the rest to Allah.
Whatever else is being said and being declared, and certainly is what is called of the need of here of – Taking The High Road! - END
***
Continued - When such impudence and arrogant violations are repeated in the future – The Elders and The Religious Leaders should come out openly to condemn such things – and preach for calm, control and peace. Being afraid and silent just makes a bad situation turn worse. We should only be afraid of Allah than anybody else.
If you see the images you will notice that they are mainly young people! I personally feel that this is the greatest loss of all things considered – in future relations between people.
Unless The West especially remove these double standards in dealings with especially The Arab and Muslim countries of these hate campaigns – there is only more troubled waters ahead – and The Losers are everyone – including them too! Especially their outlook that we are dispensable opportunity costs to please those that our adversaries – whether expressed, hidden – or even inside!
The current video messages from The White House and others to Muslims of The World are in the direct direction – albeit belatedly. We need to be treated just as they treat The Jews and The Holocaust – no lesser!

Breaking News!
Former Chinese Police Chief Wang Lijun sentenced to 15 years for abdication of duties…even in China!
One time decades back I got this call from my late Father to go and pick him up to take him for a funeral that was happening that evening. He got into my car and was not speaking. I thought perhaps because I came in late – or he just wanted to be silent – normally – when he gets extremely angry and annoyed. I had come to realise the hard way that it was better for me ‘not to prod’ – until he decided to speak himself. This time it was acute strange because he was not saying anything – longer than usual!
My Late Father PBUH
I was wondering if the old man wanted to cry – but he was holding his tears back – not to embarrass himself in front of his son. He comes from the fabric that frowns on showing emotions openly – and that is certainly in crying! Big men – and even young boys – simply do not cry! You can all cry and break into pieces all held dear all inside. Only ‘sissies’ cry out openly!
After the funeral, I could see that he now wanted to talk. So I broke the ice by asking what the poor man had died of? He stared at me as if he was going to take it out all on me – but decided at the last minute not to! Then he said – Poor man! We were everyday going to the Public place – to chase up on the applications of land for our children.
Poor man! Now he got his final plot – and it was for free! He did not have to pay any money for the plot – it was given to him for free! Just the size of his body – a bit more – but 6 feet down – to rest on his right side facing Mecca – until the Day of Reckoning! I tell you son – all these things we are chasing in life are all temporary and artificial – and there is nothing permanent and for surety except God – and Death only!
Then my poor father told me about one business man he also knew whose business had gone bust. Many reasons for it – he was telling me. But that is not important for now. In short, the man almost lost his house to the Banks – but luckily for him it was the only house he had – and there was the law to protect such cases – such in the past. He had two cars – one his and the other family. He sold off his family big car to settle debts – but kept the smaller car.
When he wanted to register the car – and when one day he wanted to go by road and to visit his relatives in a neighbouring country – he was not allowed to do so – because though he had cleared his case – and his name in the public files was still not cleared as such – and was still blacklisted! .
Images – Traffic Police – For Demonstration purposes only!
He did not have even the basic rights to renew the Mulkiya of his car – and he was driving the car ‘unlicensed and un re-registered’ – and he was afraid of in case of an accident of what was going to happen to him! It took more than 8 months to have ‘his name cleared’ – all because he was just a poor man – and had no Wastah. Thank Allah God who takes shorter time to clear us! – he sadly lamented!
He added – Such things do not happen to the rich, powerful and the famous – only poor people like him – and us! In the end, the man was so fed up – and decided to return for good to East Africa – safety or no safety – security or no security – but he just had enough! My poor father added – This man was stronger than this man who died today – God forgive us for such stray thoughts in comparisons!
I do not know if this is true or not – but one of the jokes on the public sector bribes and corruption in one third world country is about lands being allocated to the families of ‘those of influence’ – or as we say here ‘With W – Wastah! They say to a pregnant inner family or friends circle – If it is going to be a girl call her Badriya – and if boy Badr – names just coincidental – for examples and demonstration purposes only! I do not know if they knew these things of scanning – because like yours truly had twin girls – so one of the girls would have lost – till a bit later on!
In one of my articles long time back – I talked about when I started working in Oman in Junior positions – though I had a more Senior position from where I came in that distant land – from having a Company car to riding a Company bus to work. But it did not put me off – or want to return – because I put my future and my family ahead of me!
In one of my deep frustrating times far later in life – I even went looking for jobs outside that oil company. In one of the interviews with one owners’ son he asked me a direct personal question of what really made M tick? He asked me – What are your dreams and what are you looking for in life?
Perhaps he thought I would reply him that I wanted to be in his shoes – to be on his side of the desk – asking the same question to another job aspirant! Then he started lamenting to me all kind of things that were not interesting to me as a job applicant – and the success story of their family business! He then asked me if I knew another so-called rich rising family – and why I did not apply there?
In another place the ‘great personality’ was saying to me – Either we offer you a good package or nothing at all. It seemed to me he was thinking he was making a great speech impression to me – because those things are best not said – and left out – because it was just a plain commonsense message – and everybody knows about these things!
Remember all the above incidents were over 15 to 20 years ago! Far later in life – when I started writing I had a strong fan – a sort of high elite rich person who really liked my works as a writer. He said to me – I like the way you fight for the underdog! When I applied some years ago – after early retirement – for a Human Resources job in his place – he replied to me – Just keep to writing! That best suits you than a HR job! The Brits have this famous expression – Diplomacy is telling someone to go to hell – and he looks forward for the trip!
If even Mitt Romney of USA can discount 47% of the electoral vote – because ‘they are with him (Obama) – who are dependant upon government, who believe that they are victims , who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe to housing, you name it. They are people who pay no income tax ….. my job is not to worry about those people!
Bottom line – wherever you are in this world of ours – if you are poor and with no Wastah – you always get hit hard the most! Nothing has changed much during all these years! And then people dare to ask me why I like to quote many times – from George Orwell’s Animal Farm!
May The Good Lord Direct us all to The Right Path and Ways Always – Amin Amen

All Not Arranged! Marriages in Turmoil!
For Wednesday October 3rd 2012
My Other Websites –
www.majidall.com & www.majidwrite.com (New)
Between Us Only!
All Not Arranged!
Or Different Perspectives & Outlooks! – Different Priorities!
Being all alone at home now – that is most of the times – one can be really surprised of how many ideas you can get for your columns – by simply watching the Television set – because it is supposed to depict the realities and facts on the ground – whilst you watch the unfolding scenes from the comfort of your cosy reclining chair – without a care or mind for the rest of the world – but you and the television set only! It is really amazing how many things one can still learn from this television set on human dramas, vanities, foibles, and malaise – and all over the places now!
I have now compiled all my works into two new different books – which are now under publication – including the Road Safety Novel book – Behind The Wheel! – www.bethesafedriver.com This is one’s man keen interest, drive and objective to get involved in – and write about in Road Safety as his contribution to the society. My other two books carry all the articles – post earlier Between Us Only! series. More details are here at my new website www.majidwrite.com – which will also carry all my columns here too – from now on!
There is this beautiful programme about Cyprus – Island of Forbidden Love. The programme looks at what happens when romance cuts across religious lines amongst mainly Lebanese couples. According to legend – the island of Cyprus is known as the ‘birthplace of Aphrodite – the Greek goddess of love’. When love crosses the religious divide – Cyprus becomes a favoured destination for many Lebanese couples – seeking civil unions and marriages! One of those men being portrayed laments – Sunni, Christian, Druze, and Shia – we are in it all together – and there is simply no sect in love!
Images Cyprus
I have now also a lot of time for reading – and that includes rereading my own five books – all over again! Not to blow my own trumpet – sometimes I wonder if it was all done by me! But I guess when you are angry and sad too at the same time – and you speak truthfully from your own heart to others – there should be no surprises – what comes out here!
I also read in detail the newspapers and the magazines that I subscribe too! One of the jobs that had crossed my mind was to be a Counsellor – Advisor – Psychologist – or as they are sometimes referred to in pun as ‘Shrinks’! In one of the distress columns, I have noticed that we tend to ignore the problems being faced by the Expatriate communities in our midst – in their strive and struggle to adjust to our ways and lives – and to make meaningful and worthwhile their continued stay here.
I, for one, need to be frank to admit that I have not really paid full attention to their distress and plights in my concentration focus for jobs and employment for the youth – their training, recruitment, placement and development. Like most of us, we seem to wrongly think that they are here to take our jobs – our own youth – and to deny us entries to what should come – rightly and naturedly – to us – and in our desires and wishes for our own destiny, legacy and future – as future generations will judge us – and history too – on what we do now – or not do – and or advertently and or in inaction!
Every day we hear on some expatriates that have committed suicides – because they cannot take it anymore. I have said this too in the past. In one of my weakest moments in life when things did not seem to work – and everything was going against me – family included – I thank my God and my Religion – because it stopped me from doing really nasty and unexpected things in life. I now realise that I did put wrong emphasis and priorities on the wrong things in my life – rather than as my late good Mother used to tell us – peace be upon her – First is Always You! Then You! Then You Again. Then Others….let them make their own queue to you!
I am giving the same free advice to the especially expatriate wives that write in to the Marriage Counsellors and Advisors – about the problems that they face with their spouses. Few even to me! In many of the cases, the marriages are arranged – and the husband – has not given enough impetus and importance to get to know well his wife – his children even – and what she likes – what she does not like – and what makes her tick – or not! They live in the same house – though married to each other – but as complete strangers!
Mistakenly like most of us men – and with some exceptions – even some women like football – whilst the men watch dramas! We just think that bringing in the money is all important and only counts – if here – or worse scenario – send to homes across borders. In one of the Hindi films – I forgot the name – the wife was lamenting – You think bringing in the checks is all that counts – what about me? Do you think of me? Maybe the children – but certainly not me!
Frankly, there are many expatriate ladies out there that are really qualified experienced professionals – as I found when I still had my Consultancy years ago. In some cases – if they were working they could earn even three or four times the take home pay of their spouses! Sad this avenue and resource is not tapped into! Yet the husbands think still pleasing the boss – in many cases expatriates too – by staying in back ‘for artificial deceptive pretense invented works’ is far better than after looking at his wife – and even the children.
No wonder the poor ladies write in – even if anonymously – because they just had enough – or about too! When they start thinking of committing suicides – because of the phobia and dread of returning home to their families away from the husbands – then something has got to give. Like I always say – what is the point of having more money, promotions and statuses – when things fall apart – and break up in front of you? Money is not everything – family, humanity and values are!
May The Good Lord Direct us all to The Right Path Always – Amin Amen

The Great King Alexander – The Three Death Wishes!
After conquering many kingdoms – was returning home. On the way, he fell ill and he was bedridden for months. With death drawing close, Alexander realized how his conquests – his great army – his sharp sword and all his wealth were of no use to him now.
He called all his generals and said – I will depart from the world soon. But I have three wishes. Please fulfill my wishes without fail. With tears flowing down their cheeks, the generals agreed to abide by their King’s last wishes
My First Desire is that – said Alexander – my Physicians alone must carry my coffin. Secondly – when my coffin is being carried to the grave – the path leading to the graveyard should be strewn with gold, silver and precious stones which I have collected in my treasury. My Third and Last wish is that both my hands should be kept dangling out of my coffin.
The people that had gathered there wondered at the King’s strange wishes. But no one dared to question; Alexander’s favorite general kissed his hand and pressed them to his heart. O King – we assure you that your wishes will all be fulfilled. But tell us why do you make such strange wishes?
At this Alexander took a deep breath and said – I would like the World to know of Three Lessons I have just learnt. I want my Physicians to carry my coffin because people should realize that no Doctor can really cure anybody. They are powerless and cannot save a person from the clutches of Death. So let not people take life for granted.
The Second Wish of strewing gold, silver and other riches on the way to the graveyard is to tell people that that not even a fraction of gold can be taken by me. Let people realize that it is a sheer waste of time to chase wealth.
And about my Third Wish of having my hands dangling out of the coffin – I want people to know that I came empty handed into this world – and empty handed I go out of this world.
Alexander’s last words – Bury my body – do not build any monument for me – keep my hands outside so that the world knows the person who conquered the world had nothing in his hands when dying……

This book does not only provide a fascinating insight into Majid’s life but also his raw, honest and sometimes eye opening emotional roller coaster career. It is a personal account, and his brutal honesty regarding different nationalities and those of his own country is recounted so well. A lot of clips from his columns but never mind!
I couldn’t put it down. The English, although not perfect (hey, even English have trouble!) is easy to read and paints a picture as though you are there yourself

A Short Story – The Dream!
The Marriage Proposal!
Although she was the junior one by rank, she was sitting just opposite him in the same cubicle – their desks facing each other. She was just regular in making errors and mistakes – and this time he was reprimanding her again – when she could not handle it anymore – and broke into tears!
Unconcerned and yet still the man continued to reprimand her. Again you have made a mistake – accusingly he said to her. Why are you making all these mistakes? She cried profusely and uncontrollably.
The man relented. He said to her – I can see that you are under a lot of pressures. So what is wrong – pityingly he reproached her! She looked back aglance at him – non committal without saying any extra word.
Then the man took guts and courage – leaned over – and kissed her on the mouth. She did not resist! The most lips tempted him to kiss her again – he did a second time – this time longer than before. He felt her lips on him – warm, touching and moist – and she had stopped crying now! They were alone in the office.
Then he queried her – are you worried that you are now 34 – and still single? She did not reply – but just looked at him.
Tell you what – he proposed to her. If you are still single at 40 – I shall marry you myself – if you will have me! What do you say?
She looked at him in great sadness and heartbreak! Till I am 40? How will I get babies then? I like babies and children – even now at my age it may be difficult – if not too late already!
Images – Proposal – For Demonstration Purposes Only!
Like a bolt of lightning that had hit him – he suddenly sat upright! Strong emotions and feelings suddenly erupted out from him. They looked like suppressed feelings – now no longer controllable! He had tried for too long to suppress them before – but now he was failing badly!
He kissed her again. This time she was lesser responsive. Then she asked – more to herself! What is going to happen to me? Am I not attractive or a good catch? Or is it because I am too shy and keep to myself – and that is why people are keeping away from me?
He leaned over and whispered to her. From the first day I saw you – I fell for you heavily! I really love you! Then all the feelings were coming out from him – suppressed for too long! Will you marry me? – He finally proposed to her in a high pitched emotionally breaking tone!
Yes – Yes – she stammered. I will marry you anytime. I know that you are already married – with even grandchildren! That you are elder to me. That I am or maybe the same age of your daughters – but any woman would be lucky to have you – young or older! You are a good catch!
Are you sure? He teased back! Are you just saying that because I had just now proposed to you?
No I am serious – she retorted. From the first day I saw you – I was saying to myself – This is the man for me! How can I get him? What do I do to make him like me? Maybe subconsciously I was making all these mistakes – so you will take notice of me? Could that be the case? Could that be possible?
They were holding hands when they heard the office outdoor opening. They are coming back now from lunch. Let us return to normal – and not say anything to them yet!
Okay – but one more kiss – please! They joined in together in mirth and in laughter!
Now he was scratching his head – how will I tell the good wife? The children? It was then he awoke!
Thank Goodness it was all a dream! He had never dreamt such things before – like getting into making such type of proposals – and even marriages!

The Increasing Disease of Pride!
Or Feeling More Important Than Others!
Those that are my avowed Readers and Fans will no doubt acknowledge that – I always do write from my own personal experiences and exposures and as my references – and from incidents and episodes recently that have happened to me – or to people I know well for surety! This new disease of false pride is becoming increasingly rampant in the society now!
Let us start with some quotes first – on Pride: -
Long time ago, I watched this film where the ex Dictator Iddi Amin of Uganda was showing off this certificate to a cheering crowd. Then He tore the paper into two – saying aloud – Now Mr. P – you are no longer a citizen of Uganda! That is the end of a ‘paper citizen’ – and as he sends into exile thousands of Asians to all parts of the world – but mainly Canada and UK. Little did he realise that he created multi-millionaires of these exiles. Nor did he realise that one day he will too be exiled – and die in an exiled country – Saudi Arabia!
Last week I had some problems – again on ‘services’ – and as the usual unflinching M – I had phoned first to their Head Offices. Not getting any cheers, I decided to go to their website and put in ‘my beef’ – so to speak! I then followed it with an email to the Top Brass of the place. Sure enough from the top echelon came the response – Access Denied.
Image Pride
Truthfully from those in the lower levels came a positive response. So I phoned back to one and asked him most tactfully and diplomatically as I could – after even the abruptness and unnecessary provocation and insult! So I asked him why were my emails being returned to me? He sarcastically retorted that the BIG PEOPLE have no time for such trifles. So I asked him again – Did you mean trifles things – or trifle people? Knowing that I was trying to corner and trap him he just said to me just – Trust me – we are looking into your complaint – and we shall handle it soonest. But I had time still to say – if a VIP had emailed him – he would certainly not send back that email!
Image – Pride and Prejudice
A few months ago I had a similar issue and dispute with another establishment – sadly and tragically always in the news – and how good they are! I was impressed when the Secretary called me to say that the ‘Big Man’ himself wanted to talk to me! Came on to my best behaviour and performances! So he asked me – do we talk in English or in Arabic? I retorted – whichever you prefer! Then he reprimanded me saying (in English!) – That this person that you are complaining about? I can give him my heart and soul – and I can go to sleep – and when I awake up – he will give them back to me!
I do not know how that would have been possible – so M being M – I retorted to him that just now by your comments – you have left the fold of our Religion – by associating man with God – because only God can take a soul (heart) and return it – not a human being! That seemed to upset him a lot and went into almost vulgarities – unfortunately was not taping him! He was used to people bowing to him – and not standing up to him! That was the type of person that he was! He then said to me things like about how negative you are in outlooks – and it was a big mistake this newspaper was giving you a column to write!
Image The Proud Peacock!
Images For Demonstration Purposes Only!
My motto and philosophy remains the same – respect me – and I will reciprocate in kind! So to add fire to fuel – I retorted back – not a column – but two my friend! The word ‘friend’ coming from me seemed to upset him all the more! I had a very long hearty laugh to myself – when twists and ironies of life – he accused me of being ‘with chips on your shoulders – and a very proud pompous person!
Yesterday I had a long overdue chat with my son. He was lamenting to me that his friends found him ‘very open and receptive – and in speaking his mind’. They asked him how it was that he was different from them – that they had sort of a closed mind – and not open to raise issues openly on the front – instead of complaining in the back and behind scenes! And to where did he get his courage – and guts from?
So my son told them – my father has got it (this) from his father. His father had brought them up ‘not to be afraid and scared’ – speak the TRUTH always – and speak openly their mind – their concerns and worries – and not to be afraid and fearful except to the Good Lord only! If someone respects you – you must also reciprocate. But never allow anyone to scare, bully or push you down! Yes – his friends – said we can see now why we are different – because nobody had encouraged us that way and not to be afraid – but all just the opposite!
I can see that now happening with even my grandchildren! The other day I was teasing my granddaughter T where her housemaid had gone? She retorted – Granny how many times must I tell you that she has returned to Philippines? I was laughing to myself all inside me – that in another house hold she would have received a slap from different people for ‘insulting Granny!’
In the early 1970s when our families returned to Oman – I was just chatting mildly with a peer on mild issues – when he came in guns blazing – you have no right to talk anything on this matter! When I queried him why – he retorted – you were not born here! So please shut your trap – unsaid! I sadly looked at him and said – My friend – do you think being born in a place is the only criteria that matters? He retorted back yes – and I reminded him in a very tactful and diplomatic way why he was very wrong and misguided!
The saddest and tragic part was he was just a poor working person like me – and if the worst came to the worst I at least could use my father, great Mother and grandparents as ‘being a chip and part of the old block’! Unfortunately for him – he could not do the same – but yet had the pride in him to silence all others! I can now understand and appreciate now why my son is that much worried and concerned too!
Take Care!

Time To Quit Is Now!
Giving Up – Now!
I must admit that I am a sick person suffering from being an acute diabetic case and with eyes problems – cataract and glaucoma too. I also suffer from complications of so many other cases.
I had tried hard to send my books as gifts and compliments to Top VIPs and High Profile peoples – and hardly any thanks – with the exception of a few expatriate CEOs only.
Despite designing a Road Safety Website – www.bethesafedriver.com and writing a book on Road Safety Novel Type based on true life stories for others to know and learn from – nothing much has changed in being recognised and in acceptance!
Despite two Arab Management books – Psychology of Arab Management Thinking! And A Cry For Help! – even if you go to books worldwide you will find them being shown – at home nothing has changed much!
Only peoples’ concentrations are what I write in my columns – and why people would still prefer for the dirt to be pushed under the carpet – and me to shut up my mouth – not to open it – and speak!
So today – Saturday – December 8th 2012 – I am – finally – Giving Up!
We have all seen these Great Bands that had made to the top – and stayed there for quite awhile – and then they decided to disband! We have seen similar about dramas and soap operas – like Friends, Seinfield etc doing the same. Even stars like Oprah Winfrey etc.
The reason they give is the same. When you are on top – that is the time to quit – not earlier – not later! Quit whilst you have still made it – and quit where there is still some head room!
As fans that know me well I stumbled into writing more as a hobby and passion. I had never ever planned and or imagined to make a career in it. And a person who wants to make a career in writing should well know – do not depend on it for a living – otherwise you will starve to death. The story of Moawiyya Nur – the sad tragic Sudanese boy (journalist) who starved to death in trying to make a career in writing in downturn Cairo in the 1950s will well confirm and authencicate!
If I had been successful in my consultancy business and or in my career – it is most likely that I would not have gone into writing.
Today I have published 8 books – all the details are in my websites – www.myown-ebooks.com and www.majidbooks.com and www.bethesafedriver.com
2 books are in Arab Management – 1 Road Safety – and 5 in my column writings The Oman Daily Observer – Between Us Only! – At My Workplace! And Society Speaks! (KOM).
Lately I have felt strong vibes and feelings to quit. I feel it in me to stop writing. Besides saying all that I had wanted to say – nobody cares or feels what I write or say. I am just banging my head against brick walls – getting it swollen and red – and bleeding too.
Nobody appreciates or recognises what I do – anyway! Wasted time, efforts and energies – and just wasted loyalties and feelings too.
I am also not happy how my columns are being treated. Sometimes I am told we did not receive it – though copied to my addresses (and others) confirm as received. I do not know which are my days anymore.
It was supposed to be every Sunday and Wednesdays – but now are so irregular that I am myself confused!
There is an East African saying that goes like this – one does not have to tell you to go if you are a guest – the telltale signals are enough for you to know it is time that you left! Leave yourself!
I really had tried… hard!
Wishing you all the very best – and with sincere and genuine apologies –

Writing Is Not A Dirty Word!
By Majid Al Suleimany
January 18, 2013
Some years ago, I was working in this Chinese Company and I gave my first book Between Us Only! as a complimentary gift to this European Finance Manager who joined after me! He came from Tanzania branch of the same company. In the book there was an article titled Are You Afraid? It was about magic and witchcraft in East Africa.
One day earlier we had got talking about Tanzania and the subject had cropped up – and in good faith I had thought of giving him the book! A few days later I asked him if he had read the article – but he said that he had not! This person had taken a lot of pride of how he got rid of a Tanzanian local who was the Finance Director before him – and wanted to have an added plus of including an Omani in his list tick off too! Which he successfully did – by telling everyone in Management that Majid had written a book that was critical and radical of The West! That was his outlook and prerogative – and he was free to think like what he wanted to!
The same outlook was outlandishly made by some crude Western Expatriates in my previous USA run company. And that comes to the main point to be made here – The Westerners believe in freedom and democracy only if you are in their camp – and are in support of their views and in outlooks! Thus creating my two books in Arab Management – Psychology of Arab Management Thinking and A Cry For Help! – please see my books website www.myown-ebooks.com and www.majidbooks.com
They do not want you to support Palestinians or The Arab cause. Even if you are Arab – or Muslim! Shut up – Keep Quiet – and Sit In the Corner! Do not write topics like No More Wars please! Or Lift The Gaza Blockage! Or write anything against Israel. Did you notice that the Israeli Jews can criticize their own government – but the American supporters and Jews do not allow you this? This is how my two sequel books Between Us Only! had run into publishing problems in USA! In the end they had agreed to refund my monies paid – because they simply did not want association with my books!
Makes the whole exercise of their preaching others for democracy, freedom of speech, freedom of expression is shallow and hollow – because they do not allow it in their country to outsiders – and though they are outsiders here in Oman – they want the same for the locals to ‘fall down and play dead’ after the command – when you misbehave! That is why they hate The Arab Spring Uprisings – because it works against them! And Israel especially! Because they can no longer control, dominate and subjugate others – by using the puppets under their control and domination. That goes down to an individual level – and Writers, Authors and Columnists like us are special targeted for writing on THE TRUTH ONLY!
But this issue does not only extend to expatriates in our midst – but even locals too! In one interview on so-called VP HR was making great fun, joke and mirth about my writings – and my books and websites! Yet I was there not for a job in his Company – but more as a Consultant in HR! Nothing to do as me as in writing – which is not profession linked – as writing being just my hobby, interests and passion!
A great lady fan of mine – who had died in a nasty road accident had said to me that people are simply jealous and envious of you – because they know you have the knack and the expertise of writing – and they cannot – even if they dearly wished for this. Mr. M – you have not lost – you have won!
The same thing was said to me by two other lady fans – and several gents too – all local!
There was also this Indian HR guy – who first of all is not supposed to be in that position as is reserved for Omanis – who behaved just like The Western Finance Manager in a meeting with the local GM of a company I was doing some HR Project with. He thought he was cracking a great joke in the meeting – and so was a German guy who pretended to be a friend – whilst all the time feeding poison to this same GM. In the end my contract was reduced time period wise – but I quit and left within half an hour of getting the new contract – remained unsigned – and resignation instead!
That is how the cookie crumbles. I really urge you to read my two Arab Management books above.
In summary and in conclusion – writing is not a dirty word! If you cannot write – do not try to belittle and marginalise those that can!

“Our religion is one of faith, compassion, love, tolerance, and understanding – yet some of us use its name to justify their wanton and indiscriminate acts.”
This book is a large collection of articles the author has written for the book and from his newspaper column entitled “Between Us Only” in the Oman Daily Observer. He writes from a management perspective and thirty years employment in human resources and training. No punches are pulled in describing his experiences with racial prejudice in big corporation culture, both from expatriate staff and even his fellow Omani workers.
But the scope is not limited to business issues. Reasons for the economic lag in Arabic countries are also floated: “I suspect that a real problem exists in the mind of Arabs: They do not feel that they own their own countries.” These issues seem prescient of the contemporary “Arab Spring.” The al-Qaeda phenomenon is analyzed, as is the since-repressed popular rebellion against the re-election of Ahmedinejad in Iran.
His reporting on the actual conditions that foreign workers must suffer in the oil-super-rich country of Dubai are astounding. The bulk of the book is about management and human resource issues, however, and the author’s commentary is unique in its Arabic and Muslim perspective.
Suleimany originally wanted to break up the book into topics, but was told by his countries Censor Board to print them chronologically. The result is one that might put off more academically interested readers in Arabic management issues. There are no neat categories to index or access in an orderly fashion. But the general drift of the writing is illuminatingly simple. Simple human respect and kindness, universal values that transcend culture and creed, are re-affirmed throughout.
The tone of the book is journalistic, not too far from the sense of an American editorial column. It is filled with concrete examples of the way companies operate in the Arab world and as such is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in that subject. It is not a book on management theory in the abstract; the author’s rationale is moral and ethical, based on an Islamic understanding of the human condition. His approach is moderate, however, with the result being more light on effective corporate management, from the unique perspective of a manager-writer form Oman

‘Psychology of Arab Management Thinking’ offers firsthand look into Middle Eastern thinking
MUSCAT, Oman – In his new book “Psychology of Arab Management Thinking: Arabian Management Series” (published by Trafford Publishing), author and analyst Majid Al Suleimany explores the management styles that he believes helped lead to the events of Arab Spring.
“This is a no-punch-held-back book,” Al Suleimany says. “It critically reviews and assesses with deep soul searching analysis the management styles and approaches of the Arab world, especially in Gulf Cooperation Countries (GCC) vis-à-vis the international companies operating in the international arena.”
An excerpt from “Psychology of Arab Management Thinking”:
“As Arabs work is worshipped in our Religion – so what went wrong here? Especially in Management circles? Why are we behind the rest of the world, despite all our riches, potentials and resources?
This is a no punch held back, no barrels held, no stiff, no frills play – but to be as blunt, frank, open, honest and sincere as far as possible – so the book can be a learning experience and process for this generation – and future to come – especially after the recent Arab Spring uprisings!”
Al Suleimany knows his book fills a critical need. “Little is known of Arab management styles,” he says, “especially as written from the inside by an Arab himself as an experienced professional local HR and management expert, advisor and counselor.”

Between Us Only!
Wipe My Tears!
It is better in prayer to have a heart without words than words without a heart – Mahatma Ghandi
I do not know if you have noticed this? The truth is – every time that you watch the television news – or even documentaries – you will find always someone crying – so desperately and heartedly – and the tears just flow! No one is wiping the tears – and even the Interviewer does not stop for the person to compose himself – or wipe his or her tears! It is very sad, tragic and pathetic – to unbelievable levels!
Images – Tears!
We are supposed to be human beings from the word humane – but though we may kid ourselves that we do care and feel – the truth is far from the distance. It is all a sham – a façade – all crocodile tears! Nothing less – nothing more! Our hearts and souls have turned to solid stone!
We bow, kneel and pray to the Almighty – but it is all just routine mundane stuff – if just following customs blindly – but there is nothing of real value and esteem in it! Perhaps we are naïve to think that God does not see what is in our hearts – forget our fellow human beings!
The other day I had gone to visit my sick and ailing younger brother in hospital. We always complain of the smaller things in life – but we do not see the bigger picture – the real true picture. We may have many issues still to sort out – but where there is a meeting of the minds and a will determined to succeed – there will always be a way out of most things in life! That you can be sure of – in one way or the other!
It is a twist and turn of life – its foibles and out comings! Because here you decide to leave the country because you have decided to marry a foreign woman as your wife! Out of all the countries of the world – you choose a woman from a country that does not allow foreigners to own land or property. A place that you will pay heavily for your medical – even with medical insurance taken – simply because you are a foreigner! And that is one way of making quick money out of you! Especially when you are sick – and have to be hospitalised!
My younger brother – but he looks far more older than the rest of us all! Sicker also! He was complaining that he did not have water for the last 27 days – not even allowed to sip water! Thanks to those in our leadership – he was finally brought back home – after the family spending heavily on his medical treatment!
Yet we still moan and complain on the small trifle things in life – never happy – nor satisfied! We want more – give us! On seeing me – my brother was crying – and there were no tissues left in the box – seems he was crying all the time! So I gave him my clean tissues which I always carry with me! So I said to him – Let me wipe your tears! Welcome back home – my brother! A second time? Or was it a third time? I forget – important is that you are back home now!
I watch the television news. The refugee woman from Eritrea – and others from Darfur – she is crying – uncontrollably – nonstop! The tears drain down her face. The interviewer does not stop – at least to allow her to wipe her tears! Or compose herself first – before continuing! I wish I was there – because I would wipe her tears – or give her my clean tissues (and handkerchief!) with me! I would also want to ask her – What did you expect Madam?
These people have mistreated the ‘original owners’ of the land – what did you expect as a refugee – and an ‘illegal’ one too that entered the country through the back door! Did you not have freedom at home – even if hungry? Here you have no freedom and still hungry – and disgraced too on top! She was crying – My husband has been imprisoned – and my children are without! Perhaps she did not see in television so many tears and sad faces of the once who owned the land and property! They are in the land – yet crying too!
That is before other human beings from faraway places decided to move them out – to make space for their guilt of allowing the holocaust to take place – and over 6 million fellow human beings butchered and slaughtered in cold blood! Yet from the same people that are now making others cry – and wanting to preserve our ethnicity and originality imposed on others! How sad, tragic and pathetic human beings have become! Yet God still is graceful and patient – hearing his name being called in vain!
Then there is man in Mali. His hand had been chopped off – because he was suspected of stealing bread! Bread for my limb? By people determined to be more religious and observing to him – and he needed to be given a lesson! Then ‘non-believers of his sort’ come in – and the man is celebrating – to see the more observing ones being chased out to the mountains and valleys!
The woman is crying! Her husband has been killed in jail – because he threw stones at the occupiers! What if he was armed with a gun? What would his punishment have been? Even if you are in my house – my land? The East Africans say – Let him pass – the one with mightier strength! It is not a question of rights and ethics – it is just how strong you are – and where you derive your support from! The stronger the support – the more aggressive and bully you can be! Forget the rest!
Have you ever imagined this? The child is asking the mother – Why are those planes bombing us, Mummy? Are they enemy planes over our land? What does the Mother do in reply? Poor woman – she just cries! And it is the young child that now calms the mother – more braver and courageous now – Do not cry Mother! God will make those planes go away!
Because of the economy – no job – no takers! The one who lost her home? Her husband committed suicide in shame! She too is crying! Then the suicide bomber who believes he is on his way to heaven! He murders fellow believers – because he is more right and more perfect compared to others that have deviated – and need to be given a lesson of life for the deviation!
It is always the poor needy and desperate peoples that are used to kill fellow human beings that are also poor and needy like him! Puppets over a string! Those behind the scene – the schemers and the plotters – no one sees them – except of course God – and the punishment on earth – the punishment of the grave – and eternal fire and damnation!
Please wipe my tears! Take Care!

Dear Majid;
Being The Safe Driver!
We truly appreciate your thoughtfulness and initiative in bringing out this publication which is the need of the hour; with the number of accidents in the Sultanate rising at an alarming rate.
As we understand, the major cause of accidents is significantly relating to reckless driving and the book provides true real accounts that shed light on the value of safety and defensive driving.
We commend your efforts to educate residents of Oman to take this important issue sincerely.
Wishing you all the very best for your future publications.

BOOK REVIEW
A heartfelt, enthusiastic series of instructions and warnings about road safety.
Al Suleimany, a columnist for the Oman Daily Observer, observes that the Sultanate of Oman has one of the highest motorist casualty rates in the world, and he sets out in this book (not actually a novel, but rather a collection of dramatic real-life incidents) to raise Omani awareness of the causes—and results—of carelessness on the country’s roadways.
The book shows endorsements by HM Sultan Qaboos bin Said (who, like many Omanis, has himself been involved in accidents prevention campaigns), including the Omani Grand Mufti and the Royal Omani Police.
Al Suleimany stresses that the dangers involved are communal: “There can be no Omani in the Sultanate who has not been touched closely by a road death and yet we see dangerous driving every time we travel the roads.” As a newspaperman, Al Suleimany highlights printed accident reports: “Every day we see also in the newspapers about road casualty figures in the newspapers—but as usual in the coming story we never imagine or visualize that it could be someone we know well or related to.”
The work shows examples of motorists making bad or careless choices (it’s also full of accident photos and emotional reminders of the loved ones left behind when a driver dies or kills someone). The author points out several underlying causes of all this tragedy: Oman as a culture is new to driving; it has been “thrust into the 21st century in a matter of a few decades”; and Oman has newly prosperous youth who prize fast cars over safety. The author attempts to prevent new-driver heedlessness by underscoring the personal tragedies that can result from reckless driving. Al Suleimany issues stern warnings about the
high cost of irresponsibility, and although a good deal of the book is Oman-specific, many of those warnings have global applications.
A detailed, compassionate call for greater motorist responsibility in Oman.
